Views from Baitul Hilal observation tower in Segari

Next I went to the beach of Pasir Panjang where lies an institution called the Baitul Hilal.

Baitul Hilal is Arabic for a place to watch the moon... especially new moon. Seen here is the observation tower for the job.

Why watch the new moon? Because it is a traditional way of determining the coming of a new month in the Islamic calendar.

This is very important especially to detemine the start of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadhan and the following festive month of Syawal where people are urged to enjoy after having succesfully complete the fasting month. While the start of a month can be determined using falak or astrological calculations, religion demands that confirmation is made by physically observing the new moon.

While this place lies at the beach of Pasir Panjang, the overall area and its surrounding is better-known as Segari.

Anyway here are the views from on top the tower...
