Views from Bukit Tinggi's iconic Jam Gadang

Back to the stories on the Sumatera trip 25 January - 1 February...

Saturday morning 28th January 2017. After spending the last 2 days looking at interesting places in and around Pagaruyung but spending the last 2 nights at a hotel in Bukit Tinggi then only we went to have a look at an iconic part of Bukit Tinggi.

It is located at a square which could effectively be the city centre.

As it turned out it is located only 500 metres or so from the hotel.

Welcome to Jam Gadang.

Literally meaning "the big clock" it is Bukit Tinggi's own big ben.

It is said that you haven't truly been to Bukit Tinggi if you have not been to see the Jam Gadang. As it turned out you can get superb views of the city and surroundings from here.

Here's looking at the 9,000 feet plus high Mount Merapi from a part of the Jam Gadang square.

Looking at the city also from that part...

The rest of the square are flanked by shops and such...

We spent just over half an hour around here. That to me was sufficient enough to 'feel' Bukit Tinggi after having spent 2 nights at a nearby hotel.
