Walking from train station to Sungai Petani's old town centre

Around 5 pm I left Alor Setar and took the Komuter (commuter) train to Gurun. After a brief stop there I took another commuter train and dropped down at Sungai Petani.

I wanted to take a brief visit to the centre of the old town. It actually lies to the west of the train station but the exit there is locked for whatever reason.

Instead one can only take the main exit on the east side. To get to town centre one must cross the pedestrian bridge seen in this picture.

So there I was walking up the stairs...

At least I was comforted by the fact that one can get good views of the surroundings from up here...

The train station. The old town centre is just about 50 metres to the left...

Part of town centre seen from the pedestrian bridge...

Back to ground level.

Already at town centre...

To feel complete I must walk northwards to the clock tower seen in the middle of this picture.

There it is. An iconic building of Sungai Petani old town centre. It is located just 100 metres outside the train station. But because the western exit is locked I have to walk almost 600 metres to get there...
