The waters off Brunei's Lumut.
From the beach of Lumut we went to the town of Seria where we arrived at this monument at dusk.
Called the "One Billionth Barrel Monument" it is a symbol of the country's main source of wealth, oil production.
There are plaques to depict petroleum related activities.
There could also be seen machines like this around, machines which the locals call "Donkeys" to extract oil from the ground. At first I thought was only relics from the past. But as it turned out the machines are still functioning until today, supporting the larger scale operations off-shore.
Now let's have a look at the actual monument.
A list of years and activities since oil production in Brunei started.
It is interesting to note that the billionth barrel of oil was extracted almost two decades ago.
The monument on the other hand was erected only years later.
A look at the monument from the beach.
