The station of Bukit Mertajam

Southwards after Butterworth is the station of Bukit Mertajam...

One thing I noticed immediately when passing this station (which I did on the way to Hatyai and back, both in the dark before coming again the following morning) is the unique-looking pedestrian bridge...

Then there's this piece of an old train or so...

Before that let's have a look at the main building.

Back to this part of an old train... or is it one of those standalone units you often see in cartoons? You know like when Coyote was chasing the Road Runner on railways tracks or the likes?

A last look before we go further south...

Butterworth train station

So we have spent some time in Hatyai. See The colours of Hatyai. We then left for Butterworth. Since the route from Hatyai up to Bukit Mertajam has been covered in previous articles. let's go straight to Butterworth also known as Seberang Perai...

This is the morning after Hatyai...

Welcome to Butterworth station which is situated next to the jetty for ferries plying the waters to the island of Pulau Pinang.

Interesting are the old locomotives displayed in front of the station.










Now let's go inside...

But first you have to cross these tracks...

We have to rush as the train which would take us back to Kuala Lumpur is already waiting at the platform.

The colours of Hatyai

Continued from The station at Hatyai.

This is the first view which greeted us as we stepped out of the train station, a row of vans waiting to pick up passengers.

However we prefer to just walk. That's photographer Faliq taking pictures of the going-ons around.

So we started taking on the main street which runs down from the station.

There's this supermarket...

In front is this map of Hatyai.

Two or three blocks later there's this street leading to what seem's to be the highest building in the city.

Then we checked out the scene at the inner pedestrian walks...

At another part of town foodstuff dominates.

Well, there are clothings and such but food seems to be the main theme...

Fruits came in by abundance.

And it is fresh like these grapes which seemed to have just been plucked out of the vines.

On to another part of town...

We entered a bustling shopping complex.

Interesting is this indoor market.

On sale are home-made souvenirs and trinkets...

The station at Hatyai

Continued from Enter Padang Besar, gateway to Thailand.

So we are already in Thailand...

While there are some interesting views along the way, our minds are more set up for what is going to be our last and final stop...

Ah... the stop is now in view...

Welcome to the station at Hatyai...

This station is also known as Hatyai junction as like Gemas in Malaysia it is the place where two major railway routes meet...
